George Walker Bush Leadership Style Essay Example for Free

George Walker Bush Leadership Style Essay Barbara and George H. W. Bush are the parents of the 43rd president of the United Sates, George W. Bush. The two were married on January 6th, 1945 and it was said that they experienced love at first sight when meeting. George Bush Sr. was 17 when married, and Barbara was 16. The two have lived in 29 homes located in 17 cities, and is the first presidential couple to reach 60 years of marriage. Barbara’s background includes working a summer job sorting nuts and bolts during World War II as well as working at the Yale Coup while her husband was attending the college, and until her first child was born. She is the second woman in history to have both a son and husband serve as president of the United States. George H. W. Bush served as the 41st president, as well as numerous other positions within our government. Some of these include vice-president to Ronald Reagan, director of the CIA, congressman, ambassador to the United Nations, and chairman of the Republican National Committee. Besides these governmental positions he was also a pilot in the navy as well as an oil businessman in Texas. George Walker Bush was born on July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut. He was the oldest of his five other siblings: Pauline (Robin), John Ellis (Jeb), Neil, Marvin, and Dorothy (Doro). George’s sister Robin died at the age of three from leukemia when George was only seven years old. His brother Jeb would also go on to become the 43rd governor of Florida. In 1948, George Sr. and Barbara moved the family to Midland, Texas, where H. W. would make his fortune in the oil business. George attended private school in Massachusetts where he was a great athlete in baseball, football, and basketball. He was good in school, but was also known for being a bit of a troublemaker. He went on to be accepted to Yale University where he was the president of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, played rugby, and was a member of the secretive Skull and Bones society. Two weeks before graduation George enlisted in the Texas National Guard. Although there is a lot of speculation as to whether or not he completely fulfilled his duty, he was honorably discharged in 1974. In 1977, Bush met Laura Welch and married her after only three months. The couple has two children together, twins Jenna and Barbara. Family is huge to George, and he attributes Laura for stabilizing his life and helping him to give up alcohol in 1986. As for George W. Bush’s leadership style, many things through his life have affected how he chooses to lead. In 1978 he lost in an election for a House of Representatives seat in Texas, which helped him to humble himself and realize that things would not be given to him just because of his father. He helped with his father’s presidential campaign in the year 1988, and this helped him to learn the ins and outs of campaigns as well as doing the dirty work required of such a position. After this, George bought a share of the Texas Rangers baseball team and served as managing general partner for five years, where he learned how a business works and runs. He became governor of Texas in 1995 and served until 2000, when he won the presidential election on the republican ticket. He served two terms as president, and dealt with disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and September 11th. George has been quoted speaking about Katrina saying, â€Å"Throughout the area hit by the hurricane, we will do what it takes, we will stay as long as it takes, go help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives†. George W. Bush’s leadership style can be described as problem solver, delegator, decisive, visionary, and composed. He was a problem solver because he believed that getting problems solved right when they needed to be was key, and did not push them off until the next person came around to fix it. As for delegator, Bush was good at knowing when it was his place to get something done, or when he should let someone else take over the job for him. George was a decisive leader in that he made tough decisions throughout his presidency, but always did what he believed was best for our country. Visionary is one way to describe his leadership style seeing as he had a clear vision set out at the beginning of his presidency for how he wanted our country to run, and this is something that he is known quite well for. Lastly, during Bush’s presidency he had to lead our country through two terrible incidents. Through all of this, he was able to maintain his composure and remain an effective leader through tough times, which shows his composure as a leader. One of the things that George W. Bush is most well known for would be his speech that he gave at the sight of ground zero a few days after 9/11. I can hear you; the rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked down these buildings will hear all of us soon. † I believe that this quote from him helps to show all of the different leadership styles that he exhibited throughout his stint as governor of Texas as well as president of the United States. Nowadays, you can find George spending time with his wife Barbara on his ranch in Texas. He recently wrote his book, â€Å"Decision Points† and had a library put up in his name on the Southern Methodist University in the great state of Texas.

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas Essay -- Slave Narratives

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas Frederick Douglas, a slave born in Tuckahoe Maryland, was half white and half black. His mother was a black woman and his father a white man. Though he never knew his father, there was word that it was his master. Douglas wrote this narrative and I felt that it was very compelling. It really showed me the trials and tribulations that a black man went through during times of slavery. In his early years, Douglas lived on a farm where he watched many slaves receive harsh beatings and whippings. For example, one of his masters whipped his Aunt Hester because she was not there when he desired her presence. At the time she was in the company of another man, which was something that Colonel Lloyd, her master, told her not to do. As Douglas witnessed the whipping, he saw Lloyd take his aunt into the kitchen of the house and strip her naked. He then told her to cross her hands and as he tied them together and hung her on a hook, leaving her body totally open. Lloyd then began whipping her with a cow skin until she began to bleed. â€Å"I was so terrified and horror-stricken at the sight, that I hid myself in a closet, and dare not venture out till long after the bloody transaction was over† (p. 4). As a result of witnessing many beatings such as this, Douglas was able to put much feeling and heart into his works. Douglas wrote about many whites that he had encountered. Only a handful of which were not cruel to him. The oversee...

Networking Concepts – Summary

The alma of this paper Is to find the easiest and cost-effective method of connecting two separate networks. A relatively simple device called a bridge, which Is implemented through a combination of hardware and software, achieves interconnection between two networks that are the same. Interconnection between networks that are not similar, for example, a Wide Area Network and a Local Area Network can be achieved through as much more complex device called a router.A router Is a device, which can accept messages that are in a certain format produced by one particular network and reinstates them to another format that is used by another network. In this particular case of Nancy, a director of network infrastructure, it is not likely that a full replacement of networking equipment Is required. Alternative A, which is about Installing a few devices In the headquarters of BOB. The advantages of this alternative are that is that It Is the easiest, the least expensive and the quickest to imp lement. The other advantage is that this approach will have a very small impact on the network infrastructure. The disadvantage of this approach is that there will be performance penalties due to lack of integration in the architecture of the network. The second option Is replacing the network components of Bob's entire network for It to use the same protocols as BE and the two can communicate freely. The advantage of this approach Is that there will be a huge Improvement In performance due to integration in the network architecture. The major cons of this alternative are that there will be major impacts on the network infrastructure; there also will be ajar costs incurred and a lot of time required to implement this alternative. Their last alternative Is whereby the management of BE bank replaces all the devices of the B WAN and even probably the MANS so that each city or branch can communicate with the network of BE while the Lana in individual divisions remain unchanged. The advant age of this alternative is that there will be better performance gains than in alternative A and takes significantly little time to implement. The con of this approach is that it does not achieve full integration of the network and the stickiest to support Bobs network over time It might add problems to the My recommendation is that alternative C is the most applicable when it comes to the time taken to implement and the cost that is incurred in order to achieve a significant level of network architecture. However, when it comes to a long-term point of view, the second alternative is the best so long as BE passes through a transition stage like the first alternative in order to meet its immediate needs and take ample time to put into action the full changes of the infrastructure.

Business Report on Hotel Lambada

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A list of issues was listed down and they included: time taken off by employees due to strain injuries, use of internet by employees for personal use, the new employee who is on a wheelchair, how to retain employees, on site day care, alcohol during parties and the business culture of Kenya. A comprehensive research was carried out and some solutions were arrived at. It was discovered that at work massages would help with strain; monitoring employees internet use; getting a new office down stairs for the employee on the wheelchair; motivating the employees would retain them; an onsite daycare was more of an asset than reliability; monitoring service of alcohol during parties was needed and the culture was listed down. INTRODUCTION The following report was compiled for the Hotel Lambada; the business has needed some changes so as to upgrade it to the normal and required standards. The management of the hotel came up with a list of the issues that needed to be handled, a research was done and a number of results were found. These results will be the main topics in this report and also how to implement them as required by the Canadian authorities. FINDINGS Time off due to repetitive strain injuries Repetitive strain injuries are a common form of injuries in our business. They are mainly caused by repetitive work in an environment that is stressful. Most of the organizations in Canada are advising their staff to get regular exercises when they are at home like taking a walk. Another way is to have them eating a balanced diet to reduce inflammation. Also the staffs are advised to take a small break from work and roll their neck and shoulder and take some water. Maintaining the proper posture when working; for those in the kitchen and restaurant having the right type of shoes is highly recommended (Anderson, 2002). Therapies like massages, acupuncture or a chiropractic help to keep the body in shape. A work place massage is what many companies are adopting to minimize the effect of RSI’s. Providing comfortable chairs for the ones in the office also is being adopted. One benefit of this service is that it will improve the morale of the employees. Employees use of the internet Due to the high usage of the internet for non work related information the management decided to monitor the employee’s use of the computer. There are two primary legal issues that are involved; potential liability and privacy. In potential liability the employer is held liable for any actions that their employees undertake or are involved in the internet like pornography or sexual harassment. While in the privacy issues involves the concern by the employees on their right to privacy. The employer is then meant to create policies that are clear and concise. The policies on e-mail and use of the internet are to be communicated to the employees in a way that the employees understand the policies and also the consequence of breaching the policy. New special employee Recently the hotel has employed someone who needs to use a wheelchair; this has obliged the management to consider a few changes in the work place so that they can accommodate the new employee (Michael, 2009). Also it was necessary to have his office on the ground floor for easier accessibility. For easier movement his office will also have a special washroom inside for convenience. A space for parking will also be created and it will be reserved for him. This will also that he feels comfortable and appreciated in the company. Retaining employees Due to the high cost of training new employees the hotel has to adopt the following strategies as adopted by Bob Macdonald, President and CEO of Maritz Canada. His advice is that ensuring that your employees are inspired by motivating them and rewarding them will keep them loyal to the company. Motivation can be done by giving them learning opportunities, show them that you value them by simple actions like remembering their birthday, rewarding good results and goal attainment. The company should create a culture of dedication and passion that way the environment for hard work is inspiring and also fun to be in. also giving the staff time off to relax after a hard job they have done so as to keep the balance in their normal life (MacDonald, 2004). Day care service at the work place Starting a daycare centre is going to come along way to making the employees appreciated by creating convenience for them to have their children close to them. This means on their part it will reduce the costs of looking for a nanny to take care of the children or taking them to daycare. With the children close by, they are more content and their attention is on their work it will reduce absenteeism. When interviewed, the CEO of Syscon said that a childcare was not only the responsibility of mothers but of the business. Creating an onsite daycare is going to help reduce the stress of the employees and it will imply to the clients that the organization is a good one. So he begun Syscon’s Valentine Anderson Child Care Centre n the other hand the company will have to get insurance policy for the children’s safety. They include insurance against property and bodily damage, accidents, medical payments and personal injury. Alcohol during parties The law in Canada on serving alcohol in parties is stated by the Supreme Court of law. It advices the employer who is the host to take necessary action to prevent any risks that can be foreseen by a drunk employee. To ensure they are not held reliable the host should serve plenty of food, have someone to pour the drinks for the employees, have a means of transport or a designated driver for your guests back home, stop serving alcohol like 3 hours before the party ends and don’t drink much so that you can keep eye on yours guests. Partners from Kenya In Kenya they use English in most of there business communication although knowledge of Swahili would be a great ground breaker. Also in Kenya there is no specific time for ending a meeting so have enough time allocated for a business agenda. Greetings are of great importance and you will be required to ask about the person’s health or family. Look the person in the eye when conversing it show interest and attentiveness. Do not shout unnecessarily it is a sign of rudeness. Relationship is strictly official although non work related activities help build a strong working relation. Inviting them for dinner is appreciated and will help in closing any deals. Women should dress modestly and should not reveal too much of their body. RECOMMENDATIONS From my own point of view the most crucial issue is on our new employee who is using a wheelchair and the day care. The management should conduct a meeting with the staff and discuss other issues like the internet and the parties and any other that is affecting them. All other issues should be addressed so as to improve the hotels working environment; that way we can continue giving quality service to our clients. CONCLUSION The following report took a while to compile due to the large amounts of issues at hand. The problems were from fields that were not related although most of them involved the relationship of the hotel and its stakeholders. REFERENCE Macdonald, B. (2004).
